Google Business Profile not showing up? How a trade finds the cause

The short answer

If your Google Business Profile is not showing up, search your business name and town first. If nothing appears, the profile itself is the problem: usually unverified, still under review or suspended. If your name works but a search like plumber Stockport does not, the profile is live and nearby rivals are ranking above it.

Google Business Profile not showing up? Search your business name and town first, because the answer splits two ways. If your name finds nothing, the profile itself has a problem; if your name works but "plumber Stockport" does not, the profile is fine and other businesses are ranking above it.

Many pages ranking for this search list both kinds of cause together. This guide keeps them apart, and every timing in it comes from Google's own help pages, read on 27 October 2026. It is written for a trade who covers an area from home or a van, which Google calls a service-area business (its own examples include plumbers and locksmiths).

Ranking is the second half of the job, and it is what our SEO for trades work covers. The first half, below, you can check yourself.

Missing or just not ranking? The two-search test

Do two searches on your phone, signed out of Google or in a private window so you see what a customer sees.

  1. Search your business name and town, exactly as it appears on your van. Google's own help page tells you to find your profile this way.
  2. Search your trade and town, for example "plumber Stockport", and look at the map results.
What you see What it means Where to look
Nothing for your name A profile problem: not verified, in review or suspended The table below, then sections on verification and suspension
Your name works, the trade search doesn't A ranking problem: the profile is live Category, service area, reviews and competitors
Both work, but not in the next town Distance: Google weighs how far you are from the person searching Service area and competitors

Which fix matches what you see?

Each row comes from Google's own help pages. Find the line that matches your profile, then read the section it points to.

Symptom Likely cause Fix, from Google's help pages
Can't find it by name, profile shows "Get verified" Not verified Verify with the method offered; Google recommends video if it is offered
Video sent, still nothing Verification in review Wait: Google says up to five working days
"Review issues" after a video Video not accepted Tap Review issues and record a new one with the missing info
"Get verified" has come back Google couldn't completely verify the business Verify again, or try another method shown
Waiting for a postcard Code in the post Don't edit name, address or category; don't request a new code; codes expire after 30 days
Notice of suspension in your Google Account Breaks Google's guidelines See our suspended profile guide
Edit shows "Pending" Edit in review Usually 10 minutes, sometimes up to 30 days
New profile, found by name only Too new to rank Google says rankings for new businesses can take up to a month
Found by name, not for your trade Ranking Category, services, reviews and accurate info
Your website missing too Website not indexed Check it in Search Console

Is your profile verified yet?

If you can't find your profile by name, start here. Google says only verified businesses can show their business info on Maps and Search, so an unverified profile is invisible to customers however complete it is.

Google picks the verification methods for you, and its help page says they "can't be changed". Depending on your business you may be offered a phone call or text, email, a live video call, a postcard or a video recording. Google recommends the video recording if it is offered.

For a trade working from home, the video rules are practical:

  • Record it live on your phone through the profile. It must be at least 30 seconds, one take, unedited.
  • Show where you are based. If you run the business from home, Google says you can film "landmarks and signs in your immediate neighbourhood".
  • Show the business exists: your tools, equipment, workspace or branded workwear.
  • Show it is yours. Google's own example is "unlocking a van that has your business branding". An invoice or utility bill in the business name also works.
  • Leave out other people's faces, bank details and ID numbers.

Google then reviews it. Its verification page says reviews take "up to five working days", and on rare occasions longer. Some pages on this search say 14 business days; Google's pages do not.

There is one shortcut. Google says it sometimes verifies a profile instantly when the business's website is verified in Google Search Console.

Has Google taken it down?

If a profile breaks Google's guidelines, Google says it is disabled or suspended and "won't show to other users on Google" until the issue is resolved, and you get a notification in the Google Account that manages it. If you have that notice, our Google Business Profile suspended guide covers what to do next.

Did you only just set it up or edit it?

Then it may simply be waiting. Google's help pages give these timings, and they are the only ones to plan on:

What happened Google's timing
Verification review, including video Up to five working days, rarely longer
An edit to a verified profile Usually 10 minutes, sometimes up to 30 days
A change showing in search results Up to three days
A service area edit, once approved Up to 48 hours
A new business appearing in rankings Up to a month
A postcard code Expires after 30 days

While you wait for a postcard, don't change the business name, address or category, or the code won't work. Changing the category later can mean verifying again, Google says. Check each edit's status in the profile: "Pending" means it is still in review, and "Not approved" means Google couldn't confirm it.

Is your service area too wide?

Possibly, and the old way of setting it no longer exists. Google says you can't set a service area as a radius around your base. If you set one that way before, such as 50 miles, you can't edit it: you replace it with towns, cities or postcodes.

Google's rules for a service area:

  • Up to 20 areas, by city, postcode or other area.
  • About two hours' driving time from your base at most, for the whole area, though Google's guidelines allow larger areas for some businesses.
  • Be "as specific and accurate as possible".

Google doesn't say a bigger area makes you rank in more places. Its ranking page measures distance between the business and the person searching. So list the towns you really want work in, not every town you would drive to.

If customers don't come to you, hide your home address. Google's own example is a plumber working from home, who should clear the address from the profile: in the profile, turn off "Show business address to customers" under Location.

Is your main category the right one?

Check it, because Google says "the categories that you select affect your local ranking on Google". The primary category should describe what the business is, not everything it does.

Google's test is to complete the sentence "This business IS a", not "this business HAS a". Pick the most specific category on Google's list that describes your main trade; you can't create your own. Add a few extra categories only for real parts of the business, and use as few as you can. Don't add categories as keywords: Google's guidelines say not to use them that way.

Do your name, address and phone match everywhere?

They should match the real world. Google's guidelines say your business name should be the one used "consistently on your shopfront, website, stationery". On a van, that means the name on the side.

Three rules catch trades out:

  • No extra words in the name. Your trading name is fine; your trading name plus "Boiler Repairs Stockport" is not. Google says unnecessary information in the name could get the profile suspended.
  • A phone number under your control, ideally a local one, not a number that forwards to someone else's line.
  • One profile per business. Google says a second profile can cause problems with how your information displays.

Google also says it can detect category information from your website and from mentions of the business across the web, so keep the website saying the same things as the profile.

Bing's own help warns that changing a name or address on a listing fed from other sources "can create conflicting signals"; our guide to free business directories covers the other listings worth having.

Are nearby competitors simply stronger?

If your name works but your trade and town don't, that is the most likely reason. Google says local results are "mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity", and its page explains them under three headings:

  • Relevance: how well your profile matches the search. Complete, detailed info helps.
  • Distance: how far you are from the person searching. You can't change where they are.
  • Prominence: how well known the business is, including how many websites link to it and how many reviews it has. Google says "more reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking".

Google also says "there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking". So the work is steady: reply to reviews, add photos of your own jobs, list every service, and keep asking every customer for a review. Our guide on how to get Google reviews covers the asking, and the free Google review QR code generator turns your review link into a code for invoices and the van.

Ranking above established local firms takes time. Our SEO for trades page sets out the work, and each trade has its own page, from local SEO for roofers to SEO for construction companies.

Why isn't your website showing either?

If the site is new, Google may not have found it yet. Google says "it can take a few weeks for Google to notice a new site", and that crawling takes "anywhere from a few days to a few weeks". Your profile and your website are separate: a verified profile doesn't put the website in results.

To check:

  1. Search "site:" followed by your domain, with no space: for a site at yourname.co.uk, search site:yourname.co.uk. No results means Google hasn't indexed it.
  2. Add the site to Google Search Console and inspect the home page URL. If it says "Indexing allowed? No", the site is sending a noindex tag or header that blocks it.
  3. Request indexing for the page. Google says this can take up to a week or two, doesn't guarantee indexing, and asking again won't speed it up.

Verifying the website in Search Console can also help the profile, since Google says it sometimes verifies a profile instantly when the website is verified there. For what the site itself should show, see what a tradesman website should include.

Why can't I see my business on Google Search?

Search your business name and town, as Google's help page suggests. If nothing comes up, the profile is most likely not verified yet, still in review, or suspended: Google says only verified businesses can show their info on Maps and Search, and a suspended profile won't show to other users. If your name works but a trade and town search does not, the profile is live and ranking below nearby businesses.

How can I get my business to show on Google Maps?

Add or claim a Business Profile, then verify it with the method Google offers you, such as a short video recorded on your phone. Google says verification reviews take up to five working days. After that, keep the profile complete and accurate, pick the most specific category, set the areas you really cover and ask customers for reviews. Google's ranking page names relevance, distance and prominence.

Why is my business not showing up on Google after verification?

Google's help pages give three timings to check. Edits are reviewed in about 10 minutes but can take up to 30 days. Changes can take up to three days to appear in results. Rankings for a new business can take up to a month to appear. If the 'Get verified' button has come back, Google could not fully verify the business and you need to verify again.

How long does it take for my Google Business Profile to show up?

Google says verification reviews take up to five working days, and on rare occasions longer. A video verification is also reviewed within up to five working days. Once verified, Google says rankings for new businesses can take up to a month to appear in search results. Ignore figures such as 14 business days that some pages give: Google's own pages do not say that.

Why is my Google Business Profile only visible to me?

When you are signed in to the Google Account that manages the profile, you can find and manage it on Search and Maps. That doesn't mean customers can see it: Google says only verified businesses can show their business info, and a suspended profile won't show to other users until the issue is resolved. Check the profile for a 'Get verified' button or a notice.
